How Could Kindness Change the Workplace?

It’s amazing how much you learn about someone after their passing. I remember watching Bob Saget host America’s Funniest Home Videos when I was growing up. And, of course, I’m a big fan of Full House. After his sudden death last month, I’ve watched and read a lot more about him and what his family and friends are saying about him.

Kindness has been a major theme. It’s not often you hear such nice words spoken about someone. But so many have talked about how kind he was. The way he loved other people. And not in a general “he was so nice” kind of way. There are all of these really specific stories and examples of things he did for them personally or things he did for others.

In a time where it seems we hear so much bad and people are so quick to be critical, it’s been refreshing to hear such wonderful sentiments about someone. Which makes me wonder – how could this change our workplaces? After all, so many of those who are publicly praising Saget were coworkers. They worked together and STILL wanted to work together more and STILL remained friends to the extent some were pallbearers at his funeral.

Certainly, you won’t become lifelong friends with everyone you work with. But think about the power of kindness. If each of us were kind to each person we encountered each day. Think of the difference you could make in the lives of others. Think of the difference for yourself too.

Kindness leads to fairness.

Kindness leads to fulfilled commitments.

Kindness leads to deeper relationships.

Kindness leads to better decisions and outcomes because you’re thinking about what’s in the best interest of others.

Kindness makes me a better wife, mother, sister, friend, coworker, boss, employee – a better person overall.

Kindness improves the lives of others.

Think about it – everything can be done with kindness. Kindness leads to better support for mental health – maybe even improving mental health altogether in my opinion. Even tough conversations like terminations can be done with kindness.

Of course, kindness with the intent of getting these things is just manipulation. It doesn’t work that way. Only sincere kindness makes this kind of positive difference.

What if we were kind to others each and every day?

What if?
